Which Is The Best Coating Towel?

The typical ceramic coating application process includes using microfiber towels to level excess coating after the appropriate flash time. Moreover, the typical coating removal process involves two towels. The first towel “levels” the coating to ensure that it is evenly spread while, at the same time, removing the bulk of the excess coating. The second towel smooths out the coating application and removes any streaks that might lead to blotchiness or “high spots”.

The towels chosen for coating removal step can make or break the entire coating application experience. The pro installer will want a “first towel” microfiber that has the right amount of pile and stiffness to balance the need to be able to grab the excess coating without stripping off too much. The “second towel” is typically a fluffier and more absorbent microfiber that glides across the surface, grabbing any leftover excess coating.

Recommended “First Towel”. From the vast assortment of microfiber towels offered by Autofiber, the Mr. Everything towel is recommended for the “first towel”. This premium 390 GSM edgeless towel is made with ultra-fine 70/30 yarn and finished in a terry pile that makes it perfect for cutting through flashed coating for the initial leveling.

For those who want to keep track of which part of the towel has been used, the Mr. Everything towel is available in the “Quadrant Wipe” version, which has the numbers “1” though “4” printed right on the towel. When folded into quarters, one of the four numbers appears in the upper corner of the towel face, making it easy to distinguish between used and unused portions of the towel.

This also allows multiple wiping steps with the same Quadrant Wipe towel. For example, for the first wipe, use the quadrant labelled “1”. Then flip over the towel to the quadrant labelled “2” and perform a second wipe.

Recommended “Second Towel”. An excellent choice for eliminating streaks during the “second towel” wipe is the Autofiber Korean Plush line. This is another premium microfiber towel that features a high pile of 70/30 content. It is available in 350, 470, and 550 GSM to cater to the coating installer’s preference.

The plush surface of this towel pulls away just the right amount of remaining coating excess and keeps it trapped in the fibers, reducing the possibility of streaking. Also, because the Korean Plush is edgeless, it is far less likely to leave streaks in the freshly applied coating layer because the towel surface is the same density and quality all the way to the edge.
